I think if you’ve followed me long enough, you know I don’t profess myself to be a great cook, so when Daily Dish sent me a dinner for four package to try out, I knew I had to give it a shot. So what is it? It’s a weekly subscription service that sends you pre-packaged ingredients and recipes straight to your door so you can make yummy (and nutritious) meals for you and the family to enjoy. I’m all for a healthy work/life balance, and if there’s something that takes away the hassle of figuring out what’s for dinner AND giving you full ingredients for it, then could I really ask for anything more? Well..maybe a private chef, but for now Daily Dish will do.
How it works:
First things first, you’re not getting a ready-made meal, you actually have to cook it yourself. The upside is the decision-making on what to eat is sorted, and so is the shopping, right down to the spices you require and little sachets of vinegar, wine etc. You get to choose from 5 different menu’s and it’s delivered straight to your door.
What you get:
The best ingredients from local suppliers, including free range chicken. The different menu also caters for us meat eaters, vegetarians, the banting dieters, vegans and some pork free options. Oh, and for those of us who have a penchant for fermented grapes, they do wine boxes too! They deliver in most provinces in SA, so check out the website to see if you’re covered.
For 4 days out of the week, you don’t have to stress about what to cook or having missing ingredients. I also love that I get to try new things because I sure as hell wasn’t going to buy black sesame seeds for no reason. I’m not even a big Dijon mustard fan but seeing how it added flavour to the dish means it will start being a staple in my pantry. The recipe was also pretty easy to follow and I was done with most meals in roughly 30 min. The portions are also filing, which was a concern for me because as skinny as I may look, I don’t skimp on my meals. I also like that they add a personal touch by letting you know who’s lovingly packed your food.
Honestly, I had a hard time finding any. It may get pricey if you compare it to your monthly groceries if they are in fact cheaper, but if I weigh the time, petrol and effort to go to the shops, research recipes and meal plan, I think it’s well worth it. I don’t know about you, but I tend to go aisle to aisle anyway and end up spending more than I should, so this way you only get what you need and no food goes off while you’re still deciding what you’re gonna do with that zucchini. I will, however, be sending a suggestion for snacks like nuts and dried fruit to be added.
So how did I do?
I made the Chicken Mustard Burgers to start off with. I’ll admit their images look much better than my attempt, but I bet it was just as tasty! I decided to go without the ciabatta rolls and added avocado for some healthy fats. I also decided to add a bit more flavour to the chicken as it only called for salt and pepper, but other than that, I followed it to the T. So all in all, I’m a happy customer.
