Jump start your year with 2019 goals!

If you’ve been looking for a sign to get started on planning for the year, here’s an example of how I’m jump-starting my year with 2019 goals. Since we’re in the last week of January, we know by now what was just a new years resolution and what is really going to stick. The rush of a new year brings both excitement and anxiety, as we usually set out to do so much, then end up disappointed and despondent when we can’t live up to it. So I’ve set a few realistic but flexible 2019 goals for myself this year.

My first goal is to read more, which has great benefits that you can read about in my previous post here. It has been said that if you read 45minutes a day, you’ll be able to finish a book a week, depending on your reading speed and thickness of the book of course. The aim is to read a book a month at this stage. While I am already behind since I started in mid-January, I think I might still be able to reach my goal come mid-Feb. In tune with embracing more useful digital things, I am currently testing out reading more e-books than physical books as they’re more accessible for me, including journal articles and more school-focused reading material to stay ahead and on trend. I’m not strict about reading one book at a time either, as some books require reflection and application after each chapter (e.g self-help books), so in between those ‘breaks’, I read a few pages of another book.

Write-more:

This goal isn’t necessarily to blog more but to write in general. From reflecting on my thoughts and feelings through the blog, a journal or diary, to submitting a few articles to magazines and other publications. Nueroscience explains that when you write down your dreams/goals, you are 1.4 times more likely to achieve them than those who don’t. All my school, work and family/personal goals will go down onto a vision board. I know it requires hard work and consistency, things I sometimes struggle with, so I’ve got my friend Phumeza to keep me accountable. She hosts a weekly Twitter chat called #Sistahoodhour so she knows all about diligence. Having a person to share a common goal with helps you stay motivated and focused, so try to get someone who wants to push themselves as hard as you do.

Purposeful Practice

Purposeful practice is when you pick  something that you want to improve  and you find an activity that will allow you to train yourself and improve on it.


Get some green fingers:

I’ve been talking about planting a vegetable garden since we moved into our home 2 years ago (don’t look at me like that, time flies okay.) So this year I’m really going to make it happen. I’ve started small by making sure I buy the right tools and doing my research so I don’t overspend on things I don’t need. The plan is to start with fast-growing food like spinach and lettuce, then move onto tomatoes and potatoes. I’d love to have a herb garden too but I don’t want to overwhelm myself so I’ll see to it at a later stage.
