Newly 100% Black Owned Soweto Wine Festival: What Went Down

by Tiisetso Gama2 Comments on Newly 1002 Black Owned Soweto Wine Festival: What Went Down

In its 13th year to date, the Standard Bank Soweto Wine Festival was definitely high up on my calendar. It showcases and promotes the best wine and bubblies (think champagne daaarliing!) in South Africa, as well as cuisine, travel destinations and lifestyle brands. With Standard …

Aquafresh celebrates SA moms with ‘Power to You, Mum’ Festival

by Tiisetso GamaLeave a Comment on Aquafresh celebrates SA moms with ‘Power to You, Mum’ Festival

We don’t get out much as moms do we? Or at least I don’t. It has to be planned, the days of the spontaneous ‘let’s take a road trip’ vibes are long gone, and now I have to consider the family, work and life in-between …

  • And so the cold and flu issues begin 😬
.
The little one has hardly ever been sick, but since he started nursery school, he’s had a runny nose and a stubborn cough. This means our plans to get rid of the dummy are on hold since he uses it for comfort, and swimming is on hold as he recovers. I know it’s all helping his body to get used to fighting off viruses, but it’s still tough to watch as he screams when we try clear his nose.
.
But you know what’s wonderful about kids? They forgive as quickly as they get upset. So he’ll still come for extra hugs and cuddles after I annoy him with medication and nose drops.
.
Are you dealing with creeping colds and flu yet?

  • Mbusi’s upset, cue the mom guilt!
.
He’s upset with me today because when I fetch him, I usually let him play on the jungle gyms for a bit. Today I had a meeting, so we had to bolt out of there. Now there are tears because he couldn’t have “just one minute” and the mom guilt is real. The trick however is to not dismiss his feelings about it. For him, it’s a big deal, even if I think “but you do this every other day”. They’re little humans with big emotions, and we need to help them learn how to regulate them without suppressing them. So we had a heart to heart and after bribing him with a PB&J sandwich, we’re back to being friends again.
.
As for my meeting, let’s just say thank God for remote work and mute buttons!
.
What made you enemy number one this week?

  • It’s #BlackMaternalHealthWeek in the US, and their stats are alarming. The maternal mortality rate shows black women are 2.5 times more likely to die than white and hispanic women. This is due to unequal access to healthcare, racism and bias in healthcare and a lack of awareness of signs of trouble.
.
It got me thinking of my pregnancy with Mzi, and how my rockstar midwife @lilomthembu caught my pregnancy complications early during a routine checkup, and worked hand in hand with my gynae to ensure we made it to week 38. Not many of us have competent healthcare providers, but we owe it to ourselves and our children to educate ourselves on our health, attend proper prenatal care visits, and continue with post partum care until that 6 week check.

  • I’ve been trying to acknowledge and therefore overcome my limiting habits lately, which means a lot of reading on the subject. @melrobbins came up with the 5 second rule, a tool that helps you bust through self doubt, get out of your own way and bring out your innate greatness.
.
You see how it works is when you get the niggly feeling to act on a goal, you must physically move within 5 secs or your brain will kill it. The moment you feel that desire to act, go for it. When you feel yourself hestitate and most of the time come up with excuses, count 5-4-3-2-1 and MOVE! Do that task just for a mere 5min. Research shows that if you just start for 5min, 80% of you will keep going beyond that.
.
So what’s on your priority list that you can use the 5 sec rule for today?

  • #tbt to when twist outs were life!
.
I seems to have a pattern every couple of years of shaving it all off and growing from scratch again. It makes me wish I had kept a journal so I can see if it usually coincides with a major life change. We usually want our physical appearance to match how we feel inside and hair is the quickest and easiest way to feel like a new person again. This time around, between lockdown and post-partum shedding, it was a no-brainier, but it came with a renewed sense of self which has carried me through this crazy season.
.
What have you done lately that improved your sense of self?
